San He “Flower Window” Charm (Yuan)
A “flower window” (花窗) is a grid of latticework brick tiles that form windows in historic homes and courtyard walls. The decorative pattern of this charm is based on a common “flower window” motif of a stylized antique coin, which is meant to invoke prosperity and wealth.
These small charms are produced in a century old kiln that previously specialized in firing tiles for building materials in traditional homes. Since traditional construction is rare now, San He kiln focuses mainly on producing roof tiles for temple restoration projects. They have also creatively transitioned to producing home decor and tableware. Not only are these charms visually appealing but combined with the auspicious knotted cord they become small but meaningful tokens of goodwill. “Flower Window” charms can be used to brighten up an office space or study, hung from tote bags or even as original ornaments for Christmas trees.
